Custom Homebuilders Meeting the Buyer’s Security Needs

written by: Ken Johnson

In this day and age, residential security systems are becoming as common to new custom home construction as the kitchen sink. Homebuyers are committing to possibly the largest and most personal investment of their lives and need assurance their investment is being actively protected. Concerns regarding family safety, home intrusion, and residential fire protection are statistically justified and should be a priority of the custom homebuilder as well.

With this in mind, custom homebuilders would be well advised to aggressively address these concerns and include home security options in package presentations to their buyers. At the very least, be prepared with referrals to professional security contractors. Most security companies offer free consultations and are available to discuss the buyer’s personal needs and expectations regarding application specific designs.

As professionals in our fields, it is our obligation to establish the custom homebuyer’s wants and needs at the appropriate time. Security systems have long been considered elective luxury systems and have traditionally found themselves on the back burner in the home building process. This dated line of thought could lead to potential functional and aesthetic conflicts. Precise planning and coordination with other trades may be crucial prior to and throughout the installation of a modern security system. Homebuilders need to give the security system the attention it deserves at an earlier phase of development.

Today’s versatile residential security systems offer so much more than intrusion protection. Access to the fire department and other emergency services are a button’s push away. Larger custom homes are being constructed with sprinkler fire protection systems that could be monitored to minimize possible fire and water damage. In addition, sump pumps, carbon monoxide detectors, and smoke detectors could be monitored for alarm. Lighting, environmental, and other home controls are being integrated into the security system. Each of these potential applications requires consideration in a timely fashion when coordinating a professional custom home building project.

As with any other system integral to today’s custom home, proper planning and accurate detailing of the security system and its functions must be addressed to assure the homebuyer’s peace of mind and complete satisfaction with the tailored home in its entirety on closing day.
